West London Zone and Football Beyond Borders West London Zone works with Delivery Partners by commissioning programmes and services to be delivered from schools. Expand West London Zone commissioned Football Beyond Borders, a football inspired literacy programme operating in our Zone, to deliver a year long football themed literacy programme to secondary aged boys and girls. The programme uses a young person’s passion for football to inspire them to achieve their goals and potential both on the pitch and in the classroom. The programme is delivered weekly after school, on school premises, and is facilitated by Football Beyond Borders staff, supported by the WLZ Link Worker and the school's Head of PE. "The young people really enjoy their sessions with Football Beyond Borders, the coaches create a positive space for them to talk about things that are both football related and relevant to the children. The young people are always treated with respect which means that in turn, they hugely respect the coaches," Alex Brooke, Link Worker at Ark Burlington Danes Academy Secondary School
West London Zone and Into University Our Link Workers signpost and ‘link’ their children and families to the best programmes and services already being delivered in the community, according to their strengths and needs. Expand Into University provides academic support for local young people that need extra help with school work and exam revision. We identified that WLZ young people weren’t accessing the after-school sessions Into University had to offer, although they could really benefit from them. The Link Workers explained to a group of young people how Into University could support them to improve their academic attainment. They then took them to the after-school sessions to support their engagement with the programme over the first few weeks. The young people now access the Into University after school sessions independently.
WLZ children participating in the Imperial College and Royal College of Art holiday programme West London Zone works with Delivery Partners to plan and coordinate bespoke programmes and services according to the strengths and needs of the children on our programme. Expand Imperial College and the Royal College of Art both have campuses situated locally in White City. They were keen to work with and involve more local young people and so approached West London Zone to develop the "White City Project: Creative Roots," a holiday programme we delivered together with our Link Workers, scientists from Imperial College and artists from the Royal College of Art. Children made the most of the combined arts and science learning environments on our doorstep. Working together with the artists and scientists, the WLZ Link Workers and the WLZ young people participated in a three day workshop - one day at the local Hammersmith Park to explore urban ecosystems and two days at the RCA carrying out experiments and working on drawing and writing projects.
